Wrap yo’ hands, homies!
There are many, many ways to wrap your hands. Most of them are just as good as the next method, though some emphasize more padding over the knuckles, some emphasize wrist stability, and some give a little bit of love to every area of the hand and wrist. We suggest finding a way that works for you.
Regardless of the method you choose, we strongly recommend wrapping your hands before any class that involves striking with the fist. The wraps will protect the small bones in your hand, help keep your ligaments from being strained or torn, and keeps your gloves from getting smelly.
Here’s one way to wrap your hands that we think works pretty well…
- Place the loop around your thumb and start wrapping around the back of the wrist.
- Wrap around the wrist 2 to 3 times.
- Next, wrap around the thumb to protect the thumb joint then once again around the wrist.
- Go up to the knuckles along the back of the hand.
- Wrap around the knuckles 2 to 3 times.
- Finish by making an X on the back of the hand as you go back down to the wrist.
- Now, go between each finger starting with the pinky and work back towards the index finger.
- Repeat the X on the back of the hand and wrap the knuckles 1 or 2 more times.
- Finish by wrapping around the wrist and securing.
Caring For Your Wraps
After working out, instead of rolling them up, give them a light spritz with an antibacterial disinfectant spray (tea tree oil is a wonderful natural disinfectant, and it has a lovely smell!) and then toss them into a mesh laundry bag that you keep in your gym bag. Once the mesh bag is full, you can toss this in with your regular laundry. Most wraps can be put in the dryer, just be sure to keep them in the mesh bag to avoid tangling.
Once dry, just roll them back up and toss them in your gym bag for easy access the next time you need them!
