November Badass of the Month – Jason Robbins
“I’m very much an introvert,” said Jason Robbins, November’s Badass of the Month. In fact, despite what you may see in class when training with him, Jason says this whole contact combat thing is totally outside of his typical wheelhouse — the football he played in junior high notwithstanding.
When he’s not busy getting reps or being friendly with his fellow classmates, Jason’s day job puts him behind the desk at the Department of Family and Protective Services, where he’s been employed for the last twelve years (with a stint at Child Protective Services prior to that). A self-proclaimed data guy, he enjoys taking a look at social work on a macro level: “The nerd side of me totally enjoys it.”
As for his coworkers at the state office, they were definitely surprised to hear about Jason’s training. “I’ve told them all stories, too — again it’s so far out of my comfort zone, the introverted side of me — just the physical contact and this toughness, it’s just very different.”
On top of all the badass qualities already listed, Jason is also a super dad to his kids — Jade (10), Brandelford (7), and Angel (18) — along with his partner, Vivian. Family favorite pastimes include outdoor activities like hiking, parks, or anything outdoorsy. In fact, the whole group, kids included, took a trip to Big Bend National Park for Christmas: “I really didn’t think they’d make it — we were doing 10 mile hikes, no problem. Kids got all the energy in the world.”
While he doesn’t feel the need to train at Lions to deal with any data issues, Jason does feel like training has helped him in his personal life, specifically in his confidence. He said, “I feel like one of the bigger takeaways from this has been gaining my voice or feeling comfortable speaking.”
Well, he can add an official Badass of the Month award to the list of takeaways. Be sure to say hi to Jason if you see him in class (Groundwork is his absolute favorite, but he’s committed to getting into more striking as well), and congratulate him for being November’s badass!
